Best Patty Melts With Secret Sauce

Prepare the Patties: Start by seasoning the ground beef with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Shape the mixture into two equal-sized patties, slightly larger than the bread slices as they will shrink when cooked. Heat a skillet over medium heat and melt the butter. Cook the patties for about 4 minutes on each side, or until the desired doneness is achieved. Set the patties aside and let them rest.

Caramelize the Onions: In the same skillet, add a little more butter and toss in the sliced onions. Cook on medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the onions become golden and caramelized. This should take around 10-15 minutes. Once done, remove from heat

Make the Secret Sauce: While the onions are caramelizing, mix together the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, hot sauce (if using), and pickle relish in a small bowl. This secret sauce will be the key to elevating your patty melt, giving it a creamy yet tangy finish that complements the savory beef perfectly.

Assemble the Patty Melt: Lay down two slices of rye bread and spread a generous amount of the secret sauce on each slice. Add a slice of Swiss cheese on top of the sauce, followed by the cooked beef patty. Pile the caramelized onions on top of the beef, then finish with another slice of Swiss cheese. Top with the remaining slices of bread.

Grill the Patty Melt: Heat a clean skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Place the assembled sandwiches on the skillet and cook until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is fully melted. This should take about 3-4 minutes per side. Add more butter if needed when flipping the sandwiches.

Serve and Enjoy: Slice the patty melts in half and serve hot. Pair with fries, pickles, or a simple salad for a complete meal.
